It’s OK to Cry by Angela Kay Mack
“I wrote this song in the 90s. A friend of mine told me a story about how she spoke with a hard-hearted homeless Native person. She saw that underneath the hard exterior was someone who really needed to cry.
I sat down and wrote this song in one swoop.
I understand what it is like to maintain a strong exterior to survive. I’ve lived an extremely difficult life. My surname, Girton, means grit. I know how to grit. Being vulnerable? Not so much.
Like everything I write, this has multiple levels of interpretation.
This song has been coming up in my spirit a lot. There is a lot of hardness in our nation right now. We live in what I call, “The Stone Throwing Age”. Underneath the rage is a lot of fear and arrogance. I believe God’s spirit, through this song, can soften hearts. I want people to be moved to tears by this song. I want for that dam of hardness to break and to see people weeping. When they weep, perhaps we can heal. Our society doesn’t value tears. But King David knew tears. The prophet Jeremiah knew tears. Mary washed Jesus’ feet with her tears. Jesus wept when Lazarus died.
The irony of this recording I’m submitting is that the music sounds ultra happy and upbeat. It’s a toe tapper. I envision people tapping along getting into the groove and then all of a sudden being like, “Wait a second….what is she saying?” lol
My creative style has historically involved contrasts. Almost all of the songs that I have written over the years have my absolute favorite chord….the major seventh. This one starts on A major 7. It’s in the key of E which was the best key for me to sing in when I was younger.
Sharing my originals is a baby step toward being more authentic. My life career has been in theater., oftentimes playing the lead female role…character, masks, personalities. These songs are the real me. It’s a song of comfort.”
